Let me see...........I'm typing along in the rectangle here as I assume you do when you post.  On the left side sitting on top of this triangle is a smiley face.  When I click on that face all of the fancy emoticons come up.  I guess you can't do that.  If I use an emoticon in the line of them above I get  the semicolon or whatever it takes to make the face, but it doesn't show the face until it's posted.  I just don't see why you can't do the same. 
OH..........I just goddit about the fancy ones.  When I click on the little face on the rectangle the emoticons come up and cover my post too.  I just click on the emoticon I want and it appears for me, not as a face but a written blip and then comes up as a "thing" when it's posted.  You can't do that?

NO faces have appeared for me ! IF I click on the yellow faces in a line above this rectangle  ……    nothing shows unless I do a colon and bracket   and then click on a yellow face !    

I have no idea why I cannot use them. I will wait till Jack gets home !!! Hahahaha Joke. I need Angie's Frank to come fix it for me !

If I click on one of the emoticons that I want to use, then they go away but not until you click on one.

Well that is how it is supposed to work, click on one and they come up but not here !!!    NOpe, I have tried a few and still the pictures of them all is covering my writing !

I don't need funny faces because you know me !!!!!!!

They are fun to have and I have NEITHER kind so I just won't be funny anymore!
