Ulcers
« on: June 30, 2020, 10:10:40 am »
I have been having a lot of trouble with my right big toe, that is the one I have the neuropathy in. It has been red and sore for ages and also my right toe. I had made an appointment for the Dr for yesterday, Monday. On Saturday I noticed a sore on the bottom of my toe where it hurt the most, so I put a bandaid on it, but didn't think too much of it. Well I went to the Dr's yesterday and he had a look and asked me how long the toe had been sore for, I said about a month and he got quite cross with me, well as cross as he can be, and told me be both toes had ulcers on them!! He said they were dangerous and can be difficult to get rid of as neuropathic ulcers are like diabetic ulcers. I was quite shocked and upset. He took me down to the nurse so she could dress them and I go back on Thursday to have them redressed. He is then going to refer me to a High Risk Care station so they can dress and look after them properly. Don't ask me about who they are as I have no idea, but hopefully I will find out on Thursday. I was so upset and shocked about it that I even forgot to ask after the scripts I needed. Oh well I will ask on Thursday. I am still very upset about it all and to be honest I would like to look into it a bit more to find out if it is caused by my neuropathy, which is very minor, or maybe caused by a vascular problem. I am only 64, but I have so many problems that knock me about that I feel so much older :(

((((((((((((((((((((((((((Darien)))))))))))))))))))))))))))   I don't blame you for feeling upset about this.  Whenever a person would be sent to a "high risk" anything, you would be concerned.  The doctor must feel like you need some special care.  I'm sorry he was upset with you, it would make you feel so bad.  I suppose this must have hurt a lot when  you went on your walks, did he say you should take it easy and stay off your feet?

Yes it was hurting quite a bit and hadn't been going quite as far as I usually go. I am not supposed to walk very far at present, but who is going to tell my babies that. The Dr did tell me to get Robert to walk them, but no way will he do that, he never has, his excuse is he hates walking!!! If I can't walk them for a while, I'll get my pet sitter to walk them for me, they love her too :)

That sounds awful Darien ! I take it you have not been to get your toe nails done recently because of the virus .... would the nail people have noticed anything amiss ?
Some of the photos are horrible, yes I had to look it up as I know nothing of neuropathy and loss of feeling or toe ulcers.  I am going to tell you this story to make sure you DO keep on top of this problem. Shiree's Mum Dee, divorced Shiree's dad and she got married a second time to Jim.  Jim did have diabetes and he developed neuropathy and then ulcers on his toes / feet ? Anyway in the end they got septic and he had to have his leg off !  They did manage to visit Alaska like you did Linda and go on a cruise and he is still alive but Darien please take care
Can you not just let the dogs off in the garden and let them run around ?

I know Joe is always talking about being careful about his feet and I know Mary  has some neuropathy in her feet and they are both diabetic.  This is definitely a serious thing as we can see by what happened to Jim.  Probably if you had been able to have a pedicure the person would have noticed something was wrong.
It doesn't sound like Robert will be walking the babies anytime soon since he isn't a walker.  It's good you have the pet sitter who will do the walking.

Yes I do know how serious it is and perhaps if I had been able to have a pedicure they would have seen it, or maybe just having the pedicure would have prevented it, I don't know. I am not a diabetic though and that seems to be more a diabetic problem, but my Dr said no. I do want to look into it more and find the real cause of my neuropathy now, I never bothered before.

It's another one of our coincidences that we were only talking about neuropathy with your Chemo Linda! My toe was quite sore then, but I didn't like to mention such a minor thing at the time. We have so many of these coincidences, don't we?

We sure do have a lot of coincidences and there I sit every Wednesday with ice on my hands and feet to PREVENT neuropathy.  Mentioning the sore toe would have seemed like a small thing to mention to the doctor.  You probably thought that whatever it was that it would just go away.  Did the doctor say how long it will take for this to heal?

I was thinking about you and your poor toe last night and I had to look at mine just in case !  MY toe nails need cutting properly as I have trouble reaching them with scissors or those clipper things !
So many coincidence between us three !((((((((((((((((Darien)))))))))))))))))))))

Does ice help neuropathy then Linda?

I go back to the Drs this morning, so hopefully there will be an improvement.

Ice is supposed to keep it from developing.  I don't think it helps once you have it.    I mean that it is known that this one particular chemo drug can cause neuropathy.  I don't mean that people, not on chemo, can sit around with ice on their hands and feet so they don't develop neuropathy.

I think maybe Darien was going to put her sore foot into some ice..... Ouch !  I hope the doctor can tell you that your toe is getting better Darien. Does it feel any better ?

My right toe is a lot better, but no change with the ulcer on my left, although it isn't as sore as it was. The Dr is sending me to a Vascular Specialist to do some test and to rule out Peripheral Vascular Disease, he doesn't think it is, but I need to know. I have to go back on Saturday to the nurses and get the dressing changed and then again on Tuesday, but on Tuesday I see the Dr again as well. He said today I can go for walks again as long as I wear good shoes. I only ever go for walks in my Skechers or Nike's anyway. The babies will be very happy :)

I had to look it up ! PVD. I hope you do not have this !
Area of pain   Symptoms
legs                   reduced hair growth, cramps when lying in bed  ( I do have leg cramps sometimes in the night and I have to get up and stretch BUT the hairs on my legs grow FAST ! )
legs and arms   turn reddish blue or pale
legs and feet   thin or pale skin, weak pulses, wounds, or ulcers that won’t heal
toes                   blue colour, severe burning, or thick and opaque toe nails
muscles           feel numb or heavy
I have some Sketchers and they are so comfy, so are my Nikes as long as I can keep my big toe nails short !

That does sound awful and serious, sure hope you don't have the vascular disease.   It's good to find out and probably you don't and we all hope you DO NOT!!!    I have Sketchers too but I never walk anymore, it's too hot outside and the mall isn't open and with my low blood I wouldn't be out at the mall anyway.

I don't think I have PVD, nor does my Dr really either, but we need to rule it out as a cause for the ulcers. My history though is also a cause to have it checked, my heart attack and my Dad had PVD. It will no doubt cost a lot of money to find out I am ok, but it will shut Robert and Kylie up.

Belinda asked me the other day how I went at the Drs, I popped in there to pick up some books, yet while I was telling her her eyes were anywhere but on me, so I knew she wasn't really interested. She then told me that they thought Keith's ulcer could be caused from Diabetes (I told her the Dr said my ulcers were like diabetic ulcers). I said rubbish, they can tell the difference between a bacterial ulcer and a diabetic one. That was on Tuesday, haven't heard from her since!!!
