A Quick Update
« on: January 05, 2023, 04:09:44 pm »
Larry had the doctor's appointment this morning at 9:00 so I took him.  The PA saw him and she didn't like the way Larry was breathing so she called in the doctor.  They decided that Larry needed to go to the ER so we left and I took him there.  He's been there all day waiting to get into a room, but the hospital is full.  They are hoping a room will open up soon, but he's comfortable in one of the ER rooms so it doesn't really matter.  Pam came to keep us company after work and she drove me home since it's dark and I don't drive at night.  Emma came and got Pam and drove her back to the hospital so she could get her car.  They found Larry has fluid around his heart so that's why he's short of breath.   They are giving him a lot of Lasix so he has to "go" very often which irritates him.  The hospitalist came in to see him and he said there isn't a LOT of fluid so he didn't think he would have to stay too long, maybe just a day or two.  The doctor says this is due to his congestive heart failure.  He's supposed to follow up with his cardiologist so I'll make an appointment tomorrow for him to see that doctor.
I'm too tired to read and post anything tonight but I will soon.  Just wanted to let you know what is going on and why I wasn't here as normal.

Yes, it just happened in October when he had Covid.  It appears that anytime he has anything of a respiratory nature, he has this problem.
I'm ready to leave again for the hospital.  We have a blizzard forecast for later today and if that happens I might stay at the hospital. Hopefully it's just weatherman hype.   I'll drive there now and if it's really bad when I leave then Emma can come and get me and bring me home or I could just stay.
If it's not one thing, it's another.
I hope to read your posts and catch up soon.
Miss you!!

I am sorry you and Larry are having to go through this again, sadly it is what it is though. I hope he doesn't have to stay in hospital too long and the Lasix does it job quickly.  ((((((((((((((((((((Linda & Larry))))))))))))))))))))  My thoughts and prayers are with you as always.

Thanks girls, your support means everything to me.
Two cardiologists came in to talk to us this afternoon.  They say Larry's heart is weak and they feel like his pacemaker isn't working the way it should AND they think  he needs a different kind of pacemaker.........I didn't know there were "kinds".  We really liked these doctors, they are so thorough and seem very up on things.  We have decided we will drop Larry's present cardio and go with them IF they are taking new patients.  Larry's doctor practices at one hospital and these two men practice at the hospital where Larry is now so we had never seen them before.  They say Larry may be in the hospital for several days because they need to get rid of all the accumulated fluid.
They said he COULD have the surgery in Iowa City on the 18th, but when that doctor hears what is going on with Larry, they won't do the surgery.  He said "I can almost guarantee that".   They need to get this fluid problem "fixed" before that surgery and they also need to see all of Larry's records from the other hospital before they do the surgery.  I'm home early this evening.  Pam came and told me I needed to go home and relax and she would stay with Larry awhile this evening.  He says he is fine and doesn't need anyone there but we feel like we need to be there.
I need to call some people to bring them up to date so I'll leave you now and hope to come back and read your posts a little later.

This does sound better with these different cardio. doctors and hopefully you can swap over and they can get Larry sorted maybe with a new or different pace maker. Not that I know anything about them ( thank goodness !!!!)
(((((((((((((((((((((((((((((Larry)))))))))))))))))))))))))))))   PS. I Knew I had heard this similar prognosis before so maybe I am NOT so old and forgetful  !!!!!!!!!!

Good for Pam, once again she is right and you DO need time to relax at home and think about YOU and your mental health...... !

I am glad to hear that you are more comfortable with these new Cardiologists, you have to have confidence and faith in one's Drs. Do you mean that if the new Drs operate on the 18th, Larry's old specialist would put a stop to it? I'm a bit confused over that little bit. There are many different pacemakers for all the different problems of the heart, all doing different jobs.
Ok I just reread what you have said and I now get it, Larry's normal Cardio won't do the surgery due on the 18th due to this new fluid build up. Am I right?

Pam is right, you too need to rest Linda, you are no good to Larry if you don't and I know how important he is to you. All my love and positive thoughts to you both

I need to clear up what I said about the surgery on the 18th.   That's an entirely different subject................it's his bladder, not his heart.  The urologist in Iowa City has been wanting to go up into his bladder area and look all around to see if there is any hidden cancer but now we have postponed it for the 3rd time due to this heart problem.   I can see why you were confused, there is a lot going on with Larry.
I've connected with the urology office and they will reschedule the bladder surgery YET AGAIN so we won't be going to Iowa City on the 18th for that.  Actually, we were going on the 17th because they were going to call that night to tell us what time to come on the 18th and if they said 7:00am we would have to leave here at 5:30 to get there and that's too early.  For now, we will stay put and take care of the heart.
Here's the latest on that.  One of the cardiologists we saw yesterday came in today about 5:00 and said Larry will need to stay in the hospital a couple more days or so to get rid of the fluid.  He says he believes that the pacemaker he has was not set properly so he made some tweaks on it this morning and he feels that will help.  If not, he will get a different pacemaker.  He asked Larry why he had been taking one of his medications twice a day and we said "because his doctor told him to".  This doctor said he believes it was twice as much as he should have had so he's cutting that back to once a day.  I looked up the side effects of that medication and one of them  is "trouble walking" and he certainly has had trouble and for quite a while now.  We really like this doctor, he's young, probably 30'something.  It's SO NICE that he doesn't have an accent so we can understand what he says.  We looked him up online and it says he studied in Poland and at Mayo in Phoenix but he is originally from Canada.  We asked if Larry could be his patient and he said that would be just fine so that's what we plan to do.
I spent another day with him and Emma came up for a visit, she was with us a couple hours and then she had to go home and get ready to go to work.  She will go back to Waverly on Sunday, her Christmas break will be over.

Now I am also confused BUT if you have this nice YOUNG ( more up to date ) Canadian doctor who seems to know what he is talking about ..... go with him !   It is odd that Larry is having problems with his pace maker anyway .... does it not get checked regularly ??  I don't know anything about them BUT you have Insurance ?  and as for Larry taking too much ? medication ... as TOLD to do so !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!  That is ridiculous !
I KNOW I have said this before !

Get Pam to look into Larry's medical care !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Ah, I should have remembered about his bladder cancer op, that's cleared that up for me. Hopefully the 'tweaking' no doubt done by computer via an App for Pacemakers, will help ((((((((((Larry)))))))))) I am sure he must be very tired of all of this. I am glad that Larry was able to become a new patient of this Cardiologist, are his offices closer to you than the other specialist?
You must be tired ((((((((((Linda)))))))))) don't forget to look after yourself!!!

I don't think I need to get Pam to look into Larry's healthcare, I am capable of doing it myself.   We had never detected any problem with the former cardiologist nor had Pam.  We just now learned from the new one that he felt Larry's pacemaker was not doing what it needed, it was pacing too much he said.   Yes, the pacemaker was checked periodically but that wasn't the problem, mechanically it was fine, the doctor had it set in a way that this new doctor didn't feel was right.  The former doctor felt that Larry needed 2 pills a day and the new doctor thinks 1 is enough.  We will try this new regimen and see if Larry is better, it  might not work either.   We are hoping and praying it will work but Larry has major problems that probably aren't easily remedied.
