Dogs are very stoic creatures and rarely display pain as that would be a sign of weakness in the wild. These instincts never leave them. I am sure their labour is painful as you can see the whole body contract with labour contractions.
What 'orders' is Dan sending?

I guess animals need to be tough living out in the wilds as many do.
I can see why Matt would be irritated having the full responsibility of all those puppies.  When does Dan get home?

The pups need to be kept warm .... the pups need to be away from the cat and the other dogs ! We have not even seen Kevin the cat, but he has been in the cat flap and into the bathroom for his food ! Matt is good with them most of the time and why not as he will make money from the pups !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I THINK Dan etc get home tomorrow .... Wednesday .... but because of something the RE Jane said .... methinks they might be coming back via the EAST coast and staying one extra night with friends in Tauranga !!!! Hmmmm !

I never made any money out of selling my pups, by the time you pay for a good whelping box, a run to keep the pups in, feed, vet bills etc, there was very little proof, if any. I didn't breed for that reason anyway and I disapprove strongly of anyone who does!!

Did you tell Matt that Dan was staying out an extra night?  Matt might not approve of that.

I bred because I was trying to get a lovely female to show and breed from, a breeder is after that one perfect pup. Jenna's first litter were all male four of them and her second litter was five, one female and another four males. The little girl was a sweet wee thing, but not really what I was looking for in a Border Collie. I didn't bother after that as it hurt too much to sell them

I can imagine you had a hard time parting with them Darien.  How old were they when you did the parting??

Ah I did wonder about .... when the time comes to sell or give away the pups ...... Matt has already picked out that one perfect pup from Maggie's pups but he is not an expert of course ! They all look lovely to me !  They have some amazing markings on them but I believe their colours will change as they get a bit older ! SO far we think she 5 females and 6 males.  NOT that I have checked closely  !!!

They are a bit too young to pick out the best one, Matt will have a much better idea when they are older, closer to 8 weeks. I never thought to ask what sex they were, why hasn't Matt checked them all? It's easy enough done Yes, the pups will change the white colour on them now and they should turn either a chocolate or liver colour, like their mum and dad.

My pups were eight weeks old when I told them and even then it was a bit young, but it is the right age to leave their mums, NEVER any younger though!!!!

You are the dog expert Darien, you really are!!  Would it be the same for cats or any animal, I mean not to leave the mother before 8 weeks?

I was going to ASK you that Darien about the age when the pups can safely leave their mother :) I am sure Dan and Matt have looked it up anyway:)
I went down to see them today and they are getting bigger and I got a couple of photos and I see that one or two of them have started to go a bit liver coloured but not the white bits .. the black bits ... have gone more browny / liver  looking !   IT Is hard to see in the photos but I will put them up on FB in a minute..
I cannot see if they are male or female without my glasses on !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Matt says he looked again and there are 6 females and 5 males ! GO the Girls :)

Yes Linda, it's the same for cats. They learn how to be a cat or dog in the first 8 weeks of life, playing etc. The mother will correct them if they get out of hand too!! I used to sit and watch Jenna and her pups, the interaction etc, for hours. Real time wasters they are.
You don't need your glasses on to see if they are male or female, you can feel it

The kids are going to become attached to the puppies, I can see them not wanting them to go but I'm sure they have been told they won't be around for years to come.

Dan will just have to be firm and remind them constantly that they won't be staying and ignore all pleas. Jack and Cash are old enough, but Greta.........
