OLD topic.......
« on: April 06, 2025, 09:21:52 pm »
Last night John got pissed ... he was outside drinking beer with Corey and they went up to watch the rugby game at Dan's house then John came back down here and finished a half bottle of rum... in his Horlicks.  Must have had 3 cups !!!  He came to bed and fell over getting into bed and knocked over his bedside cabinet and smashed his lamp against the drawers, turns out the bulb broke into millions of pieces of glass. NO I did not get up ... on and off all night he was talking, snoring and moaning !
He got up at 7am ... according to the clock but it was just 6am as the clocks went back.  I heard him getting some porridge and thought Church must have been early today but when I got up at 9am ( well 10 am to me :) John was outside with his head on the newspaper fast asleep ! He never made it to church.
Then he decided to keep drinking the beer in the fridge.... and apparently the left over rum. He fell over this afternoon and could not get himself up... I ignored him... NOT My problem. So he slept for 2 hours on the floor of the deck with his head on the wood cutters !!!! Took a photo !!!
He did not want any food / dinner and went to bed at 5pm and is still asleep now. SO he has eaten nothing all day except porridge this morning ! How can he do that ?
I have to say it has been months or maybe a year or more since he has been in this state .... !!!!
Even Matt has NOT Been drinking these last few days !!!!!!!!!!!!! I Might just sleep on the sofa tonight !!!! OVER it !

Oh no!!!! What triggered all of his drinking, do you know? Or perhaps you just don't care and I can't say as I blame you ((((((((((((((((((((Moira)))))))))))))))))))) I have no sympathy for him either, I think it's weak to succumb to drinking again and I can say that with the correct knowledge. I would have left him there as well, his problem really and certainly not yours!!!!!!! I hope he wakes up with the hangover from hell

No idea what triggered the drinking again... except maybe he is bored, not much to do around here except cut /chop / saw wood !

I did go to bed last night and I did get a couple of hours sleep on and off ... despite John talking and snoring !!  He got up in the early hours then came back about 8am and got into bed so I got up  !!!
I don't know about a hangover as such but he has been outside on the deck all day awake and asleep on and off..... and Matt drove him to the GP Clinic but DID not go in with him as he was not exactly sober ... but John wanted a prescription for ?? as I said in a FB Post. Maybe tomorrow !
Anyway he cannot find his specs now either so he cannot read anything !

He is not too bad tonight as he has only a couple of beers in the fridge !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I Have learned to step back from his drinking to save my sanity .... since we lived in Marton so many years ago!!!

Does he usually take meds to stop himself from drinking? I always find it odd that he can have a few beers and be ok for ages, but then he will go on a bender, they call it Binge Alcoholism. You would think at his age and experience he would realise that any drinking is bad for him as it is for any alcoholic.

There are so many things he could be doing to avoid drinking, build your garden out of all the logs he has cut up for one!!!!!!! Build a shed to keep all his wood chopping gear in and a shed for you!!!!!

You are right, step back from his drinking and live your life as best you can. Now might be a good time to go and see Annie

Matt picked up some pills today from the GP for John ... and also an appt. for Thursday to see him in the clinic !  The pills are Phenergan and I KNOW I have heard of them before ?????? They are to help John sleep !!!! ?????????????   So John had a bottle of white wine this arvo which he got from the local supermarket when he went for the newspaper  ... sober this morning ...and he had a few bits of his dinner then went to bed 6PM and he is still sleeping now at almost 10PM !

The 8 pills he was given to last him till the Thursday GP appt. are called Promethazine AKA ..Phenergan belongs to a group of drugs called phenothiazines. It works by changing the actions of chemicals in your brain. Promethazine also acts as an antihistamine. It blocks the effects of the naturally occurring chemical histamine in your body.
Phenergan also prevents motion sickness, and treats nausea and vomiting or pain after surgery. It is also used as a sedative or sleep aid.

I am sure I have been on these at some time.. maybe after my hernia op or my thyroid op ? Pass !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

You probably know of Phenergan from me, I have used them for years for my allergies and to help me sleep, they are nonaddictive and I was given them many, many years ago to help my asthma, I would have been about 14 then. They won't stop John from drinking though, just put him to sleep, especially if he still drinking!!!!!

I haven't used them for a while now as I am now on Endep 25mgs every night for my Fibromyalgia and they knock me out, if I took the Phenergan as well I'd never wake up!!!!!

YES thank you !!!! I did say that to John this morning after thinking about it last night !!!!!
From what I have been reading about Phenergan...you are not supposed to keep on taking them for a long period of time !!!!!!!! SO how come you took them for so long ?
I see John had taken all the 8 pills given to him on Monday and he is now snoring in bed ! He has a GP appt. tomorrow so we shall see what happens !

I See Endep is AKN Amitriptyline... an antidepressant medication. In patients with depression, abnormal levels of brain chemicals called neurotransmitters may relate to their depression. Amitriptyline elevates mood by raising the level of neurotransmitters in brain tissue. Amitriptyline is also a sedative, and is useful in the treatment of insomnia, restlessness, and nervousness. It has also been found to be helpful in the treatment of fibromyalgia and symptoms related to chronic pain.
I think maybe I was on this for a time in Dunedin during meno.
This medicine conversation is familiar to me !!!!!!

I didn't take them all that time, just off and on, but during menopause I took them up again as they helped me sleep and stayed on them for years after that. They didn't seem to harm me and the chemists never gave me any warning when I bought them, they are an OTC med.

Hopefully the GP John sees today will be able to help him and YOU

I Do note that Phenergan is an over the counter drug ! Not something I even thought about until now !

Saw the Lovely young GP today as I have said earlier .. and now at 10pm John is outside after taking his half a sleeping pill and his Phenergan ......!
Went outside .. 10:03 and John is well asleep ...... leaning on the table.
He was asleep so I told him to get up and go to bed.... " BED .... where are my cigarettes .... " Pass !

I have had enough . Sorry but I do have to put this in writing, maybe for future reference or whatever  !!!!!!!!!!!!!

I hope you left him out there, I would have!!!!! I agree with Chris, why don't you go and spend Easter with Annie? This is such a great opportunity for you to do so. Go see your Dr and get some Valium for the flight and book a flight to Brisbane, even better if you could get a flight into Coolongatta, closer to Annie that way.
I did a quick search and you can fly from Auckland into the Gold Coast airport, so that's good.

I DID leave him out there and it was cold too ... he came into bed bloody freezing about 3am .... luckily I had put the hottie in his side so he could get his feet warm but he put on his side of the electric blanket ........ and it was on all night BUT thankfully he had it on low and not high !  I kept waking up and thinking I would get out of bed go to his side and turn it off ...... but then it was comfy and I would fall asleep again ! SO it was still on this morning when I got up at 9am ish ! I DO not like the idea of the electric blanket on WHEN we are in bed !!!

Tonight he seems more normal .... after a couple of beers !!!!!!!!!!!!!!! He is watching the rugby and it is 10:10pm and I am ready for my bed and it is cold so my electric blanket is now on !!!!!!

That was nice of you to put a hot water bottle on his side of the bed, more than I would have done so!!!! We don't have electric blankets on our bed, I don't like them, same as we don't have flannelette sheets either in the winter, I just change the quilt from the wool one to the feather and down one and that is always enough for us.......so far!!!!
