Three Friends

Deb rang me yesterday to tell me she broke the fibula bone, just below the knee!!!! She was in Sydney, just finished watching a show with friends, when she miscalculated the steps and missed one in the theatre and fell very awkwardly. She thought she had snapped a ligament or something and she said the pain was horrible, the friends she went with wanted to call an ambulance, as did the theatres ushers, but she refused as she didn't to be stuck in Sydney. So they caught a taxi to the train station and with the help of her friends, she made it onto the train and home. She got an appointment with her Dr to get a referral for an Xray and ultrasound, the next day and the Xray showed the break in her fibula, her Dr sent her to the hospital, but because of where it is she can't just have a boot as it would pressure on the break and possibly break it all the way through, they mentioned a full leg cast, but Deb said no to that. They sent her home with pain meds and told her to rest and she has an appointment in 2 weeks with an orthopaedic Dr to see if it is starting to heal.

Oh help,  I bet poor Deb was in pain. (((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((Deb))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))). I suppose the doctor would have told her IF she needed to have a plaster cast !

I wonder if it was her ACL .... a very common injury if you fall or twist your knee area.... very painful too ...  all my kids have damaged their ACL.  Annie twice with social netball, Dan once with snowboarding and Matt once with rugby and had it fixed in NZ....  but it did not heal so he had to have it re-fixed a year later when he came to Perth.   I do remember Annie in Perth and she had a bandage type covering cannot remember the boys but I think Matt had a plaster cast on the second time and then had to see an orthopedic surgeon 3 weeks later !

The anterior cruciate ligament (ACL)
This is one of the ligaments inside the knee joint. It runs diagonally connecting the front (anterior) of the tibia to the back (posterior) of the femur. This ligament helps to stabilise the knee joint by controlling backward and forward movements of the knee. It stops the tibia bone from moving forwards in front of the femur.

I'm glad to hear that Ed will be good and helpful, that will make all the difference. 

They can't give her a boot, because where the break is, is where the boot would put pressure on the break each time she walked. They wanted to put her in a full leg cast, up over the knee, but she refused. So all they could do was send her home and hoped it would start to mend if she rested it. She has an appointment with the orthopedist Dr in 2 weeks.

Hmmm she could have problems walking in her old age !    Never mind being incapacitated for a month or so in a cast !

I assume Deb wouldn't have the full leg cast because of how awkward it be to get around in it. I hope it heals well too as she likes to walk, even though, like me, she hasn't been walking much lately due to the dreadful humidity we have had. I am going to call her this afternoon and find out how she is, hopefully she is resting!!!!!

It would be hard to just sit and rest like that but at least she will recover and walk again, not like Susie who will be sitting for the rest of her life.  I know you will cheer her up and it should improve her mood, I sure hope so.
