So cold.
« on: December 10, 2019, 09:39:43 pm »
It got really cold last night. I even had to dig out my long pyjama bottoms and I nearly needed a hot water bottle !  ( Luckily John was there :0 )  I was talking to Nana Jill and she lit her log burner as it was so cold !
It was not so bad today, not cold but also not warm and it is supposed to be summer !
I see Cedar Rapids had a bad snow storm Linda and I do note that you did not have much to say on our 3 Friends site :) :) I hope you have not been cut off !!! :)

Your temperatures have been all over the place over there Moira. I hope you kept warm with John

That would explain why Linda has been quiet, I hope it's a short time only.

Was I quiet?  I didn't notice but if you say so. I am late getting here today since I goofed my entire day away.  It is cold here too, you two have no idea how cold and windy.  We went to an orchestra concert at Emma's school last night and it was FREEZING and WINDY.  But..........the auditorium was roasting so I fanned myself with  my program the entire time I was there.  Something must have been wrong with their heating system, it was way too hot.  We HURRIED to our car after the concert and the cold air felt good at first and then all of a sudden I was TOO COLD!
Yesterday we had freezing rain and a little flurry of snow and it made things VERY SLIPPERY.  There were a lot of accidents and maybe that's what you read about Cedar Rapids.  There was very little snow but very bad driving conditions.  I texted Emma yesterday and told her to be careful when she left school.  Where do you read this news Moira???

I read about the car accidents and bad weather in Cedar Rapids on the news page that comes up on the computer ! Its World News not just NZ news. That is a different web page :) You will catch a bad cold changing temperatures like that and going from cold to hot then back to cold !!! That's what my mother used to say :) It was quite warm again today but it does get cold in the evenings.

OIC..............I can't believe there isn't bigger news for you than the weather in Cedar Rapids, that is AMAZING.  We are an hour from Cedar Rapids so our weather was basically the same, not good
It is very unusual to close down a highway, and especially when there isn't much snow, but there was ice and there werel cars piled up.  Luckily only one person was seriously injured, but that's one too many.  People would have been driving slowly so that would have helped...............or they SHOULD have been!!

You are right Linda, I can't imaging your cold as we never get really cold here. That's problem with some types of heating, in an auditorium full of people it would be hard to regulate I should imagine.

You can't get a cold going from cold to hot or visa versa, a cold is an air born virus.

Hahaha Darien but that's what my MUM always said :) :) You can get hot and cold and a temperature from the changes ! It feels like a cold :)
There was a picture of your highway in Cedar Rapids on the news Linda. It looked very cold and icy too. It would drive me mad sitting in a too hot auditorium !

That highway 380 from Waterloo to Iowa City was just terrible.  Cedar Rapids is right in between Waterloo and Iowa City and this is a route we drive quite often, it's a busy road.  I still can't believe you saw a PICTURE of it, I find that amazing.   We were out briefly that day and that was enough for us, just to the mall and back home.

If we had such bad weather snow and ice, there is no way I would be  driving anywhere ! We used to get it bad in Dunedin and I would not drop the kids off outside school as it was half way up a steep hill. I would drop them off at the bottom and they had to walk up the hill  !   NO faces work for me !

A lot of streets in Dunedin were steep, if I remember rightly.

I'm glad you weren't out in the cold for too long Linda.

I don't think anything of the cold Darien, I'm used to it but I don't like to be out when it is icy, old ladies should avoid falling............old men too.  Both Larry and I are sort of tipsy, our balance is off and it's the same for all the oldies we know.  It's something that seems to come with AGE.  It's no wonder so m any older people fall.

OH I Must still be young then because I Am not tipsy YET !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Not when I am walking on smooth ground anyway even in my flipflops  ! There is time yet ….. I know I Am not as old as you are Linda  :) :)
Yes the streets of Dunedin were very steep and Dunedin has the steepest street in the world ...  Baldwin Street ! I did once walk up it when we first got to Dunedin but apparently a place in Wales ?  is now claiming to have the steepest street.  I cannot remember the name ! .

Oh Linda that is a great way to describe your balance, I was trying to tell my Dr the other week about my balance lately, I often stagger as if I am drunk and it really bothers me. Don't go out when it's icy if you can avoid it then (((((Linda & Larry)))))

I remember that street as Robert wanted to drive up it and I wouldn't let him as it was way too steep for me. I had heard that somewhere else had claimed the steepest street.

I just looked it up and the Guinness Book of Records are still saying Baldwin St is the steepest with a gradient of 19 degrees at it's steepest point.

Staggering, that's what it is.  I'll be walking along when all of a sudden I'll be walking out of the line where I planned to be walking, Larry does it too.  It does make you feel like you have been drinking a little too much.  I didn't notice this ever at all until the last year or two so Moira, you have plenty of time to be tipsy!
